I can’t tell if that says 16.5 or 16,5 inches. A comma would just be confusing there.
That’s because in many European countries the comma is used as the decimal separator.
Yup, both in Norway (where Kristian’s from) and in Hungary (where I’m from) the comma’s the official decimal mark (but we are not alone: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_mark#Hindu.E2.80.93Arabic_numeral_system :P).
Personally, I’m used to seeing both as a decimal mark (and we don’t use thousand separators in everyday life), so it’s hard for me to comprehend how it could be confusing in this context.

Well, the beauty of this one is that (unless he’s edited it) it actually looks sort of like both a comma *and* a period. I saw only a period when I first looked at it (being Canadian and all) and didn’t even skip a beat.
Actually I changed it without telling anyone! Oops.
As a pro, it’s always hard as wood.
As a con, I don’t think he’ll feel much.
