That’s not true actually. If a star has sufficient start mass, it can go supernova on its own.
That said, our sun doesn’t have enough mass, and would turn into a red giant (125x diameter) first, which basically is what this comic depicts, then eject half its mass in a planetary nebula, and finally cool/shrink down in a white dwarf.
Heralding doomsday, ancient artifacts called “news papers” will make an inexplicable but brief resurgence.

A super nova requires a binary pair of stars.
Also you don’t get a regular nova if you keep your star on a diet and don’t let it eat so much soda and planet pop.
