Actually, in World War 1, aerial combat wasn’t really used. We sent planes up to scout, and they might get shot at from the ground, but plane to plane combat wasn’t common until World War 2. Some World War 1 pilots even told stories about how they would go up to scout the enemy position, meet enemy pilots headed to scout THEIR positions, and wave to each other as they passed because neither plane had any weapons to speak of!

Ha! Great story. I heard that some pilots, at the end of WW1, carried small bombs and manually threw those down (first ‘bombings’)
