Scrabbled
Are you in love with someone? Send them the first three panels! Are you breaking up with someone? Send them the entire strip! It’s a win-win strip in regards to potential referrals.
Edit December 11th, 2009: Long overdue I finally got around to redo the second panel following the proper Scrabble rules. No more made-up vertical words now!
yeah, epic win!
Ooh, top left corner. Put ‘now’. It’s either that or ‘moo’.
Looks more like “nom” than “now”. I can has cheezburger?
‘moon’ and ‘omen’ are also possibilities, if she wanted to be really cryptic and mess with his head.
Or ‘men’, indicating her infidelity and/or desire to remain polyamorous.
It should be tagged ‘someone dies… inside’.
Matt: +1
I guess she could always put down “now”. Or moon.
Considering women tend to believe in “signs” being everywhere, I’d have to say that even if the lovely lady in his company would have said “yes” under any other circumstance, things are looking quite glum for our Guy With The Glasses right now…
I’m pretty sure “lor” and “iya” aren’t words. Make sure your lover (or soon-to-be-ex-lover) doesn’t play Scrabble much.
Really love this one Kristian. One of your best.
He really didn’t think this one through, eh?
Thanks for commenting, everyone! I really appreciate it.
When I made this one I didn’t think of the “now” possibility, but looking at it now it surely is a beautifully hopeful possibility. I love it! Still, it looks like they’re playing the game with slang house rules, as “lurve” probably isn’t in any conventional dictionaries, either.
Trivia: This strip actually fared a little bit better in my native language Norwegian, as in how the words were tied together in the second panel, but also because our word for “no” is the three-letter “nei”, when drawn out to a prolonged “neeeeei” became the most amusing version to me.
my girlfriend loves scrabble, I’ll have to remember this trick and stack the racks
Awesome! You have to let us know how it turns out.
Personally, I don’t even have a Scrabble board to try this on… Sigh…
She should totally challenge.
IYA, LOR, and LURVE don’t appear in the scrabble dictionary!
Actually, buddy there didn’t really think this through very clearly.
There’s only two ‘Y”s in a standard english language scrabble set.
“Iya” and “Lor” aren’t words. He’s breaking the rules of Scrabble! Also, “Lurve” is questionable as a word since it’s purely colloquial and may not be in most accepted dictionaries.
Awww…my fiance proposed to me by sticking the ring in the Scrabble tile bag. :)
@AndyLL, Totz the Plaid: Ah yes, as mentioned earlier I had to make readability of the words take precedence over the actual rules, although I’ve been thinking of redoing that second panel with the correct rules in mind. All the proposal words would be there, along with an additional one like “love” or something, but they obviously won’t appear in order. I’m not entirely sure this would improve the strip, though. I could be wrong?
That there are no more Y’s for her to spell out “yes”, however, is just another happy accident that made this entire scenario even more hilarious to me. Thanks for the heads up!
@Missy: Aw, that’s adorable! I hope the proposal had a better outcome for you two than our hapless hero above.
Aw I wish I could see the original 2nd panel. All of these comments got me wondering!
In the new version she can’t answer with ‘no’ since there’s nowhere for it to attach…
want original 2nd panel. should link in comments.
Just take all the N’s out and make an “OOOOO”!
If there’s will, there’s everything.
Why does she only have six letters, if it’s the beginning of the game? And did he take two turns in a row?
How the fuck can she play now when there sin’t a W in the comic????
Cool it, Turbo. :) The comic was eventually changed so that the letter placement on the board made more sense.
Commenting for the version of the strip that only has the two words ‘marry’ and ‘me’ on the board.
If I were her I’d play ‘noon’ so as one of the n’s is at the end of ‘me.’ She’ll get triple value for ‘n’ twice, once for the word ‘noon’ and once for the word ‘men.’
