Hah, well – it’s technically not even an (intentional) homage. I actually had to google that – Dr. Seuss was never big over here (to my knowledge) so I didn’t read any of his books when growing up.
But yeah, I can see the connection now – but unless my internet sarcasm detector is completely off, I think it’s pretty safe to say that Jeff was joking. :)
@Moy
That bird looks like a full bird to me…the bat genes you speak of must be recessive and the octopus must have them also for them to be expressed in the offspring.
This gives me warm fuzzies! :) I didn’t actually see any Horton connection until the comments, probably because the bird & octopus are co-parents. But now that I see the potential homage, it just makes me love it more because Horton Hatches the Egg was one of my favorite childhood stories.
Oh, if only Lovecraft was obscure. But this is a neat take that I’ve not seen before.
happy lil squiddys!
the best cthulhu comic imho: http://www.goominet.com/unspeakable-vault/
Cutest Cthulus ever.
oh yeah dude, Cthulu is huge on the interwebs.
How huge is Cthulhu? Cthulhu is so huge that in the near future, webcomics will be reviewed according to their Start to Cthulhu score. ;-)
Not that I’m complaining, and no, I hadn’t seen this particular idea before. Plenty of cute little Cthulhus around though.
Direct rip off Horton Hatches the Egg. For shame.
I think it’s more of an homage than a rip-off…

shouldn’t it have been a bat instead of a bird…? Just saying bird wings and bat wings are not the same. Cute idea though.
IA! IA! Cthulhu! Fthagn!
@hippoface
If the octopus and the birds are managing to reproduce together, then it’s certainly plausible that that’s a half-bird, half-bat.

I just looked at a bunch of these on IsItFunnyToday.com and this one is seriously crazy town. Wow.
OH MY GOODNESS THIS IS SO CUTE.
My friend and I have been drawing baby C’thulu comics for AGES! Who says C’thulu can’t be adorable? ;)
The octopus has cheated on the bird with a bat!
It’s the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus! http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/
HP Lovecraft…obscure? Hah!

There’s also an ancient (USENET) April Fools post about the elusive tree octopus.
