Tough Crowd
Yup, this comic has two jokes for the price of one!
Also, looks like his audience was full of grumpy Jiminy Critics! Ho!

Well, I prefer something more convenient to kill them, like a bug trap or so. I find to use a bat like to kill a flea with a sledgehammer :-)

This must have been the funniest Optipess strip I’ve read so far. Great job!
it meant the animal, not a baseball bat…
@anonymoose: He says this strip has TWO jokes and both are in this word…
I think I got it… O.o
Man, got to love the “chirping crowd” joke, but it’s better with actual sound…

Also, that joke hurt.
This is one of the best Optipess strips I’ve seen. Outstanding!
@afoutado: I thought the first joke was that the bugs are crickets, who despite the name of their species aren’t any good at cricket (the sport). So the bats as animals and sporting gear would only be one of the two jokes, not both.
And I thought the chirping would be akin to cricket laughter. Maybe he failed at the delivery? Because there’s nothing wrong with the joke itself! :-D
Great strip as always! But I can’t see the pun working in Norwegian. Out of curiosity, what was the original joke?
Thanks for your comments on this one, gang!
Well, the “two jokes” thing was on one hand the cricket’s stand-up joke, and on the other my joke about a cricket telling a cricket/cricket and bats/bats joke — and getting nothing but crickets in response. Um, yeah. I think maybe(?) the “getting crickets” thing is mostly an American saying, as I don’t think we have anything similar in Norwegian. So no, the chirping wasn’t meant to be their applause, but perhaps it works that way as well…
Also, I’m quite proud of the cricket joke, as I came up with it hours before posting, and that it kinda works with its two double meanings. If anything, I maybe should’ve gone with a lamer joke to better show that his routine tanked!
Actually, I had an alternative joke in mind to make it sort of a Conan/Leno-like thing:
Panel 1: “So did you hear what happened to our Cricket team? Terrible thing, this.”
Panel 2: “It was eaten by bats!”
That one even makes it potentially distasteful for the audience, further explaining why they didn’t laugh. Hm well, I doubt I’ll change it now.
Well, I’m Brazilian and I could get both jokes so I don’t think cultural divergences was the problem for the ones that couldn’t get the jokes.
Ditto, I really liked it. Probably my favorite.
Wow, i found three jokes!
This is fantastic, one of the best comics I’ve seen. I only wish you had gone with the 80’s/90’s style brick wall background instead of curtains.
Ah yeah, you’re right! (I’ve been obsessed with Louie lately so I should definitely have picked up on that.) It’s a small thing but it would add to the comedy club atmosphere. Maybe I’ll get around to changing it one of these days.
Oh, and thanks!
When you wish… upon a… ‘sob’…
Just checking in 13 years later. Still no brick wall update.
Still my favorite webcomic of all time.
